PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotation detector which can be miniaturized. SOLUTION: Recessed and protruded parts 1b are formed along the outer circumference of the upper side surface of a rotating plate 1 having light transmittance. A first and a second reflective optical coupling elements 2 and 3 are disposed so as to be slightly spaced apart from the lower side surface of the rotating plate 1. Emitted lights from the first and the second reflective optical coupling elements 2 and 3 are incident on the respective recessed and protruded parts 1b of the rotating plate 1, and the reflected lights from the respective recessed and protruded parts 1b are incident on the first and the second reflective light coupling elements 2 and 3. The rotational angle, the rotational speed, and the rotational direction of the rotating plate 1 are detected, on the basis of the light receiving outputs from the first and second reflective light coupling elements 2 and 3.
