PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means to exert the desired sealing performance stably. SOLUTION: The installing structure of a shaft sealing mechanism according to the invention is equipped with a groove 71 having a width greater than the minimum width dimension w3 of each thin plate 29 and a mounting piece 61 to be fitted in the gap between the groove 71 and a leaf seal 25. On the side with a group 29A of ring-shaped thin plates, the leaf seal 25 is furnished in a single piece with a leaf spring 56 to support them in the levitated condition in such a way as coaxial with a rotary shaft 23. The peripheral base end side of each thin plate 29 is arranged as making relative movement with respect to the inside of the groove 71, and the structure is furnished with a pressure receiving surface 61b and a low pressure side plate 54 to form the specified gap dimension between the side edge of the thin plate 29 and the pressure receiving surface 61b.
