PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a flame retardant woody material which is highly fire resistant and fireproof; can be harmonized with natural environments; and can be obtained by usefully recycling end chips and sawdust generated during woodworking and wood waste generated during dismantling of a building. SOLUTION: The wood modifier aims at making a wood or the woody material flame retardant only by a phosphoric acid compound and contains an essential oil component derived from a tree as a component to prevent the wood from becoming easily decayed due to the eutrophy of the phosphoric acid compound. The essential oil component not only gives the wood antiseptic properties but also absorbs various harmful ingredients and creates an atmosphere wherein the same aroma as present in woods can be perceived, around the wood itself.
