PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a varnish for forming a liquid crystal alignment layer, the varnish having excellent storage stability with which an alignment layer having mechanical strength resistant to friction by rubbing and having excellent adhesion property with a glass substrate can be formed. SOLUTION: The varnish for forming a liquid crystal alignment layer contains a polymer obtained by using a compound expressed by formula (1). In formula (1), R<SP>1</SP>represents hydrogen, an alkyl, aryl or arylalkyl group, Q<SP>1</SP>represents hydrogen, halogen, an alkyl, phenyl, cyclopropyl, cyclobutyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl or cyclohexenyl group or a phenyl group having a substituent, Q<SP>2</SP>represents a group expressed by formula (2).
