PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simplified hydrotreatment process for decoloring a supplied hydrocarbon material. SOLUTION: This process removing colored compounds in a supplied hydrocarbon material includes a step in which the supplied material is hydrotreated in the presence of a first hydrotreatment catalyst under a condition effective for hydrotreating hydrogenatable compounds existing in the supplied material, and a step for hydrotreating the effluent from the first hydrotreatment step in a second catalytic hydrotreatment step carried out in a second hydrotreatment reactor under a hydrotreatment condition. In this process, the effluent from the first hydrotreatment step is separated into a gas phase and a gas-liquid mixture phase prior to the second hydrotreatment step and this mixture phase is hydrotreated in the second hydrotreatment step without further adding hydrogen.
