PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum cleaner wherein unnecessary power consumption is prevented. SOLUTION: The vacuum cleaner is provided with: an electric blower 12 for sucking dust; a frequency discrimination circuit 30 for discriminating the frequency of an AC power source of this electric blower 12; a controller 50 for controlling the phase of the blower 12 with a pulse P outputted by this frequency discrimination circuit 30 corresponding to the frequency of the AC power source as reference; and a DC power source circuit 21 which converts the voltage of the AC power source to DC to supply it to the frequency discrimination circuit 30 and the controller 50. A switching circuit 40 connects the frequency discrimination circuit 30 to the AC power source when the DC power source circuit 21 is connected to the AC power source, and disconnects the frequency discrimination circuit 30 from the AC power source when the frequency discrimination circuit 30 discriminates the frequency of the AC power source. This switching circuit 40 connects the frequency discrimination circuit 30 to the AC power source when the blower 12 is driven, and disconnects the frequency discrimination circuit 30 from the AC power source when the blower 12 is driven.
