<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a traction elevator for improving the design effect around the landing hall doorway. <P>SOLUTION: This traction elevator has a car 1 for moving along car guide rails 8a and 8b, a counterweight 2 for moving along counterweight guide rails 9a and 9b, a set of hoisting ropes 3 for suspending the car 1 and the counterweight 2, and a driving machine device 6 arranged above the counterweight guide rails 9a and 9b between the car 1 and a wall of an elevator shaft, and arranged in an upper part of the elevator shaft by including a traction sheave 7 for engaging with the hoisting ropes 3. A control device 20 for driving this driving machine device 6 is arranged in the vicinity of the driving machine device 6.
