PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor laser element preventing noise which occurs since return light from an optical disk direction becomes reflected light to the optical disk direction, and to provide a manufacturing method for easily manufacturing the element. SOLUTION: In the semiconductor laser element, a light emitting layer and a second conduction-type contact layer are installed on the surface of a first conduction-type semiconductor substrate, and a stripe-like waveguide is formed in a resonator direction following a light emitting layer laminating direction in the light emitting layer. At a rear face of the substrate, a part is removed along a horizontal direction of the substrate from a laser beam outgoing end face, and a step is formed. A base of the step is in a position below a center of the light emitting layer by 50μm, and a side face of the step is almost vertical against the base and has an angleβwith respect to the laser outgoing end face.
