An agitator (10) comprising a hollow body (11) for channeling solid material, and means (14, 16) for imparting agitative motion to the body. The agitator (10) is particularly suited for use in a gas producer (12) that burns solid fuel and includes a feed hopper (20) for feeding the fuel into a combustion zone (22). The agitator is provided between the feed hopper and the combustion zone in order to channel said solid fuel from the feed hopper to the combustion zone. The application of agitative motion to the agitator body serves to prevent bridging in the solid fuel.
