The method involves an address of an address assignment server being stored in a device. The device transmits an inquiry message to the address assignment server. As the response to the inquiry message, the address assignment server transmits address information for a parameter server to the device. The device uses the address information to establish a connection to the parameter server (ADS). The parameter server uses this connection to transmit to the device parameters which are used for configuration of the device. An independent claim is included for an arrangement for configuring a device in a data network, where the device has a memory for storing a distinguishing data record.
