Ignition apparatus with intelligent disconnection

The controlled high voltage generator (11) connected to the lamp (1), supplies start- or ignition impulses. A control circuit (12) connected to it (11) controls it in different modes. The cold start detection unit is connected to or forms part of the control circuit. A re-settable extinction counter is also connected to or forms part of this circuit. It counts extinctions and/or start pulses. It is designed to prevent further starting attempts until the next cold start, when a given number is reached. A timer (38) is triggered on starting of the gas discharge lamp and is connected to an extinction counter. This resets the counter on expiry of its triggering time.
