Process for casting a steel melt (S) comprises pouring the melt into a distributor vessel (1), and forming a slag (K) on the melt after casting which has a molten slag layer (Ks) made from a MgO-free slag-forming material melting at a low temperature. An independent claim is also included for a slag-forming material made from CaO and Al2O3 with the exclusion of MgO.
