The self-propelled vibrating plate (2) compactor is vibrated by two rotating eccentrics, mounted in a housing (9) which can be pivoted relative to the machine. The operator can vary the angle or the housing (9) by means of a control bar, thus altering the inclination of the resultant of the vibratory forces. In this manner the horizontal vector of the vibratory forces is increased as desired and used to propel the vibrator. The two eccentrics are mounted on parallel axles (01, 02) and rotate at the same speed. The inter-related angular settings of the eccentrics ensure that the resultant of the vibratory forces passes perpendicularly through the housing (9) fulcrum (0).
