The vehicle has at least one axle with pneumatic suspension and the system has suspension struts, a compressor (1), at least one pressure container (20) and valves. The suspension struts can be connected either to the compressor outlet or to ambient air or directly to the pressure container (i.e. via valves) and cannot be connected via the compressor inlet to the pressure container. An independent claim is also included for the following: (a) a method of operating an inventive system.
