1,134,489. Bi-stable device. BENDIX CORP. 10 April, 1967 [13 May, 1966], No. 16306/67. Heading G4P. [Also in Division G3] A vortex type fluid amplifier of the type in which the rate of flow of fluid (e.g. air) from an inlet 24, Fig. 1, to which it is supplied at a pressure Ps by a source 25, to an outlet 44 is controllable continuously by a vortex created by circumferential jets 30, 32, Fig. 2, fed, at a pressure Pc. from a source 31 via an inlet 29, is given a characteristic Fig. 3, for output pressure P o against supply pressure Ps, for a constant value of control pressure Pc, having considerable hysteresis, by shaping the outlet 44, Fig. 1 so that it increases in size from a small opening 44 to a larger opening 54, either progressively, as in Fig. 1, or abruptly, as in Fig. 1a providing that the angle of increase lies between 5 and 45 degrees. The hysteresis can be exploited in the conventional manner to provide two stable conditions of flow 1 and 2, Fig. 3 for given values of Ps and Pc. Switching from one state to the other can be achieved by additional, oppositely directed, jets 38, 43, Fig. 2, pressure applied to one of these effectively shifting the central characteristic, Fig. 3, either leftwards or rightwards by aiding or opposing the control pressure Pc. The state of the device can be determined by a pick-up pipe 58 located as shown.
|
