1,015,158. Friction clutches. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. Dec. 12, 1962 [Jan. 12, 1962], No. 46972/62. Heading F2C. In a friction plate clutch for motor cars &c., comprising compression springs E abutting a cover plate D and biasing a pressure plate C towards a driven disc B accordingly clamped to a driving flywheel A, clutch disengement is effected by pivoting radially-arranged throwout levers 50 about knife-edged fulcra 45a at the sides of holes 45 through the cover plate so that the outer lever ends 57, lying in pockets formed in lugs 30 of the pressure plate, withdraw the latter against the bias of the springs. Strip springs 70 attached at their inner ends 72 to the levers 50 and at their outer ends lying in pockets 75 in the lugs 30 are held slightly bowed, so that their mid-portions 71c engage the sides of the holes 45 opposite to the fulcra 45a, to bias the levers &c. against their coacting parts. Shoulders 62a on the levers 50 extend over the edges of the fulcra 45a, to retain the levers against centrifugally induced radial movement. The outer ends 57 of the throwout levers 50 have bulges 58 engaging plane faces 59 of the lug pockets and are bifurcated at 50d to straddle the lugs 30. |
