PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for controlling driving of a reciprocating compressor is provided to reduce power consumption by cutting off driving voltage during fixed period in which stroke is maintained by mechanical resonant force of a spring. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus includes a power voltage detecting part(40) detecting power voltage impressed into a compressor(30); a power voltage judging part(90) receiving power voltage detecting signal output by the power voltage detecting part to judge a period of the power voltage; an electric current phase detecting part(70) detecting phase of electric current impressed to the compressor; a stroke phase detecting part(80) detecting phase of stroke impressed to the compressor; a TDC(Top Dead Center) determining part(60) detecting phase difference between the electric current phase signal of the electric phase detecting part and stroke phase signal of the stroke phase detecting part to determine a TDC; a driving voltage determining part(50) outputting driving voltage determining signal periodically to cut off driving voltage using the period of the voltage detected by the power voltage judging part; and a compressor driving part(20) receiving power voltage, and cutting off the power voltage depending on driving voltage determining signal of the driving voltage determining part to drive the compressor.
