Bulk material discharge system - using mass flowmeter for automatic control of discharge gate valve; e.g. for charging coking ovens

A device to discharge bulk material from a bunker includes a mass flow meter which senses the actual value of the flow rate continuously and feeds them to a controller. This contains the stored desired values for the flow rate and produces an output signal in direct proportion to the instantaneous discrepancy between actual and desired value. This output signal actuates the drive of a gate valve for the control of the flow rate accordingly. This controls the flow rate of bulk material continuously and smoothly independent of the pressure of a container to be charged. It has a flat response and can adapt itself to varying conditions, e.g. for charging coal gasification reactors at pressures of 30 bar.
