PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for driving a gate of a liquid crystal panel are provided to reduce size of the liquid crystal panel by using a decoder to drive gate lines sequentially. CONSTITUTION: A gate drive IC(Integrated Circuit)(32) generates a plurality of gate driving signals and a multiplicity of control signals. Decoders(D1,D2,...,Dj) divide gate lines into plural blocks and provide the gate driving signals to the gate lines of corresponding blocks by being selected by each of the control signals at a different period. The number of the gate driving signals is k (a positive integer) and the number of the control signals is j (a positive integer). A sum of the number of the gate driving signals and the control signals is less than the number of the gate lines. The k x j gate lines are driven by using the k gate driving signals and the j control signals.
