PURPOSE: A method for automatically setting a sound volume of a mobile terminal is provided to allow a user to smoothly use a mobile terminal without causing others' inconvenience by automatically setting a sound volume corresponding to ambient noise. CONSTITUTION: A user initially sets a sound volume of a mobile terminal. The user sets an automatic sound volume compensation function to be used continuously. When the user selects a manual compensation method with respect to setting of the automatic sound volume compensation function, he/she can operate a manual compensation function by inputting certain keys. When the user operates the manual compensation function, a controller measures external noise through an audio transmitter and obtains a digital value of the external noise. The controller applies the digital value to a pre-set conversion table to obtain an estimate sound volume. The controller obtains a compensation value by comparing the estimate sound volume and the initially set sound volume. When the user selects a periodical automatic compensation method, the same procedure is periodically executed as that of the manual compensation method according to a delay time to control and maintain an optimum sound volume.
