PURPOSE: Provided are an aqueous paint for an automobile body external panel, which is capable of recycling due to being halogen-free and capable of reducing loadings to environment due to shortening of steps, and a method for forming a multi-layer coating film with good anti-chipping property and finish property by using the same. CONSTITUTION: The aqueous paint for an automobile body external panel comprises as essential components, (A) a resin particle containing an olefin polymer and an acrylic polymer in the same particle, (B) a hydroxyl group-containing resin, (C) a curing agent, and (D) a pigment. The aqueous paint is employed to form a multi-layer coating film by the method comprising the successive steps of: coating the aqueous paint without coating an anti-chipping primer onto a coating substrate consisting of a metal coating substrate or an electro-deposited metal coating substrate, followed by heat curing to form a cured coating film or to form an uncured coating film as it is; coating a topcoat paint by at least one layer onto the coating film to form a topcoat film; and heat-curing at least one uncured coating film.
