The suction head (1) comprises a first suction module (8) for separating the sheets in the stack (2) and a second suction module (9) for transporting the sheets in a scale-like manner, which can be connected to the first module. The second module can be disconnected from the first one and moved into a front working position in the front region of the top sheet (11) in the stack, so that the suction device (13) in the second module can pick up the top sheet via its front end region and transfer it in the feed direction to the transfer table (4), whilst the first module is idle so that individual sheets can be supplied to the table in a non-scale-like manner. The first module is used to raise the sheets via their rear regions. The second module can be used to supply the sheets horizontally to the in a scale-like manner.
