The invention relates to a process for preparing (E)-N-methyl-N-(1-naphthylmethyl)-3-phenyl-2-propene-1-amine or the hydrochloride or oxalate derivatives thereof, by the reaction of the (E)-3-phenyl-2-propenal with N-methyl-(1-naphthylmethyl)-amine, consisting in that the (E)-3-phenyl-2-propenal reacts with the N-methyl-(1-methylnaphthyl)-amine as such or as formate, and with the formic acid, in the presence of a catalyst selected from among Cu, Fe, Zn, MgCl2(NH4)SO4, in the presence or the absence of an organic solvent, the reaction product being isolated by crystallization from various organic solvents. The invention also relates to an oxalate derivative of (E)-N-methyl-N-(1-naphthylmethyl)-3-phenyl-2-propene-1-amine prepared by the claimed process, as a crystallized product, having the melting point at 180...183 C.
