The fire extinguishing apparatus and the method for fire extinguishing can be applied for fire-fighting with non-inflammable liquid, such as water, of fires having class A and B mist formation in closed premises. All parts of the combustion process are attacked by relatively small quantities of water. The fire extinguishing apparatus (10) comprises a pressure tank (12) with control valve (30), pipes (14 and 16) in a water supply network (36) with control valve for discharge (32), multiple sprayers (18), multiple fire detectors (20), including detector for fixed temperature of the fire (40) and detector for temperature increase (42) and control panel (22). By the method a mist of water vapour with a median droplet diameters of between 50 and 500 micron is produced for extinguishing of fires in closed risk areas (100). The mist is generated through nozzles (18) operating at less than 20 bar, i.e. at low pressure. Less than 1 m3 is used of water from the volume of the risk area (100). It has surrounding walls (102) between which risk fire equipment is fitted: motor (104), fuel tanks (106), outlet pipe (108), outlet end-piece (110), heat exchanger (112) and air shaft (114).
