Small driverless passenger vehicles are configured to carry passengers in either a shared or private mode by having laterally facing seating stations that are spaced from one another in which adjacent seating stations have opposite orientations so that passengers are neither directly opposite, nor directly proximate, one another. The vehicles have sliding U-shaped canopies cantilevered over the vehicle floor providing ingress and egress from both sides of the vehicles. The vehicles have rear openings for ventilation, which are covered by grilles and protected from precipitation by an overhanging portion of the vehicle's roof. The vehicles are used in combination with a passenger transportation line having stations that include queues for shared vehicle use and queues for private vehicle use.
