Refluxing means (30) of a refluxing head (3) for use with a multi-station reaction apparatus (1) comprise an array of frusto-conical cooled members (31) each having a slanted end face (33). The refluxing head may include a device (306) for facilitating location of the refluxing means within each reaction vessel. The refluxing head may comprise a plate (301) movable between an engaged position, in which it engages the reaction vessels so as to prevent withdrawal thereof from the cells (5), and a disengaged position. The multi-station reaction apparatus may comprise cell blocks (4) each shaped so as to have an upper portion having a surface (41) in which cavities constituting cells are formed and a lower portion comprising a foot (40) which is smaller in area than the area of the surface of the upper portion. In the reaction apparatus a cell block (4), thermoelectric device (7) and heat exchanger (9) may be clamped to the base of the apparatus by means of a clamping system (8) having one point of contact with the cell block on one side thereof and two points of contact with the cell block on the other side thereof, such that the points of contact are in a triangular formation. Each cell block may be shaped so as to provide, adjacent to the cell, a group of recesses (45) for receiving respective electromagnetic stirring coils (46), such that adjacent cells in the array share such coils.
