Binaural quality assessment apparatus and method

The apparatus has a front end processor for aligning a mono reference signal. The processor comprises a leveler for adjusting power levels of the signal. A modeler generates a speech quality prediction based on disturbance profiles. A noise making determiner (51) compares signal parameters of a degraded stereo signal and generates a noise masking indicator. A speech quality prediction is generated based on the profiles. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a method of assessing the perceptual quality of stereo speech signals transmitted via a telecommunication network (b) a computer readable medium carrying a computer program for implementing a method of assessing the perceptual quality of stereo speech signals transmitted via the telecommunication network.
