In the heat exchanger laid in the ground, a multiplicity of long heat exchange tubes (3) laid parallel in the ground with a mutual spacing and the interposition of distributors (4; 5) are connected a supply pipe (1) laid in the ground and to a return pipe (2) laid in the ground. Each individual distributor directs the heat transfer medium, principally consisting of water, into a group (6) of a plurality of heat exchange tubes, or extracts it therefrom. In order under the different temperature conditions that occur to avoid high stress loading of the ductwork, or to achieve risk-free strain compensation, the ductwork is constructed such that the transverse dimension (q) of the distributors (4; 5) is small in relation to the transverse dimension (Q) of their heat exchange tube group (6), and the individual exchange tubes (3) are constructed curved in their end sections (7; 8). The heat exchanger is suitable as a cooling system for power stations, the ground being heated, and it being possible to use the waste heat from the power station for agricultural purposes. It can also be used in conjunction with heat pumps, the thermal energy extracted from the ground being used for heating purposes in buildings. <IMAGE>
