A method for producing a polarizer is disclosed wherein a polyvinyl alcohol film is at least subjected to a dyeing step using a dichroic dye, a uniaxial stretching step and a metal ion processing step, and then subjected to a water washing step and a drying step. With this method, metal ions can be efficiently contained in the film by using a metal sulfate salt in the metal ion processing step.
