A fishing rod, comprising a base upper rod (2) having an engaging female part (2a) on the inner peripheral surface of the tip end thereof and a middle rod (3) formed in a convergent tubular body connected to the ear tip side of the base upper rod (2) and having, on the rod base end outer peripheral surface, an engaging male part (3a) increased in diameter by one stage more than the other portions and tapered to match the taper of the engaging female part (2a). A chamfered portion (10) reduced in outer diameter toward the ear tip side is formed on the ear tip outer peripheral surface of the base upper rod (2) within the range of not exceeding the engaging female part (2a) from the ear tip side end of the base upper rod. Also, a coating layer (15) applied in an area ranging from the ear tip side end edge to a rod base side through the area of at least the engaging female part (2a) and, in the rod base side area of the chamfered portion (10), applied so that the outer diameter is not changed in the axial direction is formed on the ear tip side outer peripheral surface of the base upper rod (2). The engaging male part (3a) of the middle rod (3) is completely stored in the base upper rod (2) even if the middle rod (3) is extended to the ear tip side of the base upper rod (2).
