The invention relates to a process for converting a particulate lower rank coal feed into a solid fuel which is substantially free of water and inorganic components and is partially or completely soluble in a solvent. In the process, the coal is treated in a reactor (10) with a solvolysis solvent containing phenolic derivatives and/or alcohol derivatives in an acidic medium and the mineral solids are subsequently removed. The solvolysis solvent may be produced from coal or a portion of the solvolysis product by pyrolysis in a reactor (20), thermal liquefaction, catalytic liquefaction or indirect liquefaction (via gasification). A distillable liquid fraction suitable for dissolving the solvolysis product may also be produced during liquefaction. <IMAGE> |
