(-)-menthol is separated by adding to racemic menthol, less than equivalent O',O-di:benzoyl-(2R,3R)-tartaric-acid. The mixt. is heated until liquefaction. The melt is cooled for crystallization. The (-)-menthol-O',O-di:benzoyl (2R,3R)-tartaric acid molecular complex is removed by filtration. An aqueous base is used to decompose the complex. Raw (-)-menthol is extracted by a solvent. The solvent is distilled off and opt. the process is repeated for further purification. |
