In a process to manufacture an automotive camshaft, each cam profile is accorded a slit that extends to the central longitudinal void (5). Each cam slit is widened and the resulting gap filled by a first welding process, thereby fixing the cam. The interface between the cam root and shaft is welded, creating a second weld seam. The cam outer surface (10) is hardened in the vicinity of the second weld seam.
