Car acceleration direction angle estimation system uses linear approximation from ratio of longitudinal and transverse acceleration sensor outputs

A car (1) acceleration (14) direction angle estimation system uses the ratio of outputs of longitudinal (kx) and transverse (ky) acceleration sensors (18, 20) as a linear approximation to the acceleration angle in a crash. An independent claim is also included for a crash protection system using the angle estimate initiated by an impact to control air bag release.
