A multi-needle sewing machine, especially a chain stitch machine (2), is fed with layers of sheet material from rolls (4) by a feeder unit (5). At least the lowest layer and any layer of elastic material, e.g. paper and foam material, are forwarded by conveying belts to provide a tension-free feed. The creel installation (3) is equipped with mechanical handling equipment to lift and install the fabric rolls (4).
