An absorbent article (1) having a layer of absorbent material (2) enclosed between a sheet (3) of impermeable material and a sheet (4) of porous material; the layer of absorbent material (2) has filled portions (5) where absorbent material (2) is interposed between the two sheets (3, 4), and empty portions (6) where no absorbent material (2) is interposed between the two sheets (3, 4) and where the two sheets (3, 4) contact each other; and the empty portions (6) are aligned in two directions perpendicular to each other to define a number of square filled portions (5).
