An electric double layer capacitor (100) comprises an electrochemical element (30) having a pair of electrodes (32, 36), a pair of metal container members (10, 20) for housing the electrochemical element (30), and an electrically insulating gasket (40) which is interposed between the container members (10, 20) for providing electrical insulation between the container members (10, 20). The electrochemical element (30) is hermetically enclosed in the container members by caulking a caulk portion (10b) of one container member (10) to a brim portion (20b) of the other container member (20) while interposing the gasket (40) between the caulk portion (10b) and the brim portion (20b). The caulk portion (10b) of one container member (10) and the brim portion (20b) of the other container member (20) are bonded with each other by the gasket (40).
