PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for controlling a spoke of a color wheel in a reflection type image display device are provided to control the spoke of the color wheel so as to use also a spoke section, thereby improving brightness and enlarging color gamut. CONSTITUTION: R, G, and B input signals are mapped by a gamut mapping process in a color gamut mapping operation part. A spoke section control part decides whether a spoke section is to be used or not according to levels of the mapped R, G, and B signals. When it is decided that the spoke section is to be used, a control signal is inputted to a color signal processing part. Herein the color signal processing part uses the spoke section of a color wheel corresponding to the control signal and then, reduces the light quantities corresponding to the spoke section added according to the levels of the mapped R, G, and B signals.
