PURPOSE: An authentication method using a synchronous protocol is provided to utilize selectively a desired authentication method by providing various kinds of safe authentication methods. CONSTITUTION: A client is connected to a server and transmits a message including an ID to the server(S4). The server interprets the message including the ID, generates an arbitrary random constant, and transmits a message as a challenge to the client(S8). The client receives the challenge, calculates a response value corresponding to the challenge, and transmits a message including the response value to the server. The server determines the authentication on the basis of the response value and transmits a result to the client(S10).
