<p>A consumer electronics device such as a television set (10) is provided with apparatus (20) for broadcasting location information that describes the position of the device. The broadcasts are made with a power so they facilitate a reception range that is quite short, typically a few metres to a few tens of metres, for reception by mobile equipment (30). Because the mobile equipment is aware that the broadcast range is short, the mobile equipment (30) assumes that it is in the vicinity of the device (10). Prior to use, the user of the device inputs a post code or other position identifying information into the device (10) to be stored in memory (22). By incorporating such apparatus (20) in a variety of mass produced products, a very large number of devices capable of providing positioning information will appear in the public domain.</p> |
