PURPOSE: A picture communication system and method using VOD(Video On Demand) terminals is provided to achieve high-quality, inexpensive picture communication by compressing picture communication data using the image compression and voice compression of VOD terminals, transmitting the compressed data to computers using short-range communication, and executing picture communication through the Internet. CONSTITUTION: The image and voice data of VOD terminals(142a,142b) are transmitted through the Internet(200) as a picture communication terminal function in the VOD terminals(142a,142b) is combined with an Internet service function in computers(106a,106b). The VOD terminals(142a,142b) and the computers(106a,106b) are connected through not only a cable, but also short-range communication, such as Bluetooth, IrDA(Infrared Data Association), etc. The VOD terminals(142a,142b) execute voice and image data compression. The compressed voice and image data are transferred to the computers(106a,106b). The compressed and transferred voice and image data are converted in the form of UDP(User Datagram Protocol)-IP(Internet Protocol) packets, and the converted data are transmitted to the Internet. |
