Embolic protection filters having means for retaining embolic debris capture d therein are disclosed. An embolic protection filter (10) in accordance with the present invention may include a filter frame (12) disposable about a guidewire (14), a filter membrane (22) for filtering embolic debris, and a valve (30) configured to prevent the escape of filtered embolic debris. The valve may comprise a leaflet (34) valve having a plurality of leaflets configured to engage each other about a coaptive region (38).
