A fuel cell stack layer 1 with a metal substrate 10 including a porous region and a non-porous region 11 bounding the porous region is described. A first electrode layer is located in and/or over the porous region, an electrolyte layer is provided adjacent to the first electrode layer and a second electrode layer is provided adjacent to the electrolyte layer. The metal substrate includes one or more gas channels 30 formed on at least one side thereof for the passage of fuel gas or oxygen containing gas. Gas manifold areas 40 may also be provided in the fuel cell stack layer 1 to allow distribution of gas to other areas of a stack. This simplifies the components required to make a fuel cell stack. Fuel cell stacks incorporating a plurality of such fuel cell stack layers 1, the use of the fuel cell or fuel cell stack and a method of constructing a fuel cell are also described. |
