Translucent ceramic with high refractive index

A ceramic material powder for a translucent ceramic is moulded with a binder and the resulting green compact is embedded in a ceramic powder containing at least one element in common with the green compact. The compact embedded in the ceramic powder is heated in an oxidising atmosphere to remove the binder. Thereafter the compact is fired in an oxygen concentration higher than that in the oxidising atmosphere to yield a translucent ceramic. The translucent ceramic has a refractive index of at least 1.9 and is paraelectric, having a perovskite crystal phase as a principal crystal phase. The translucent ceramic may be represented by Formula I: Ba (SnuZr1-u)xMgyTazvOw, Formula II: Ba(ZrxMgyTaz)vOw or Formula III: Ba (SnuZr1-u)x(ZntMg1-t)yNbzvOw. The ceramic may be used as an optical part.
