PURPOSE: A discharge light emission device is provided to permit a discharge tube to emit light at a low voltage, and simplify a circuit configuration and reduce manufacturing costs. CONSTITUTION: A discharge light emission device comprises a discharge tube(11), a fullerene coating film(17), and leads(12). The discharge tube serves as a light source, and has discharge electrodes(13) arranged in both ends of the discharge tube. The fullerene coating film is formed by coating a fullerene compound into a predetermined thickness on an inner wall of the discharge tube. The fullerene which is sublimated from the fullerene compound by the temperature rise in the discharge tube in accordance with a discharge operation, is coupled with other element in the discharge tube at the state where the fullerene is at a gas state, to thereby generate a fullerene compound ion. The leads are connected to the discharge electrodes, arranged outside the discharge tube, and connected to a power source(15).
