<p>Manufacture of a catalytic converter involves placing a portion of a mounting mat (14) on the outer circumferential surface of a monolith (12) and setting the monolith into rotation, and subsequently stuffing the monolith together with the mounting mat into a catalytic converter housing (42). Manufacture of a catalytic converter formed with at least one monolith being held in a catalytic converter housing for a vehicle catalytic converter involves: (1) placing a portion of a mounting mat on the outer circumferential surface of the monolith and setting the monolith into rotation, while the mounting mat is being fed tangentially and is carried by the monolith; and (2) subsequently stuffing the monolith together with the mounting mat into the catalytic converter housing. Independent claims are also included for: (1) A plant for manufacturing the above catalytic converter comprising an application station for applying a mounting mat on the outer circumferential surface of the monolith, the station including a winding housing at which a feed gap (28) feeds in the mounting mat tangentially as well as a clamping mechanism (20) for holding the monolith in the winding housing during the winding around with the mounting mat, where the clamping mechanism is provided with a rotary drive for rotating the monolith around its axis of rotation, and a stuffing station for stuffing the monolith with the mounting mat into the catalytic converter housing being kept ready; and (2) A catalytic converter mounting mat application device for applying a mounting mat on a monolith, the application device comprising a winding housing at which a feed gap feeds the mounting mat tangentially, and a clamping device holding the monolith in the winding housing during the winding around with the mounting mat, the clamping device including a rotary drive for rotating the monolith around its axis of rotation.</p> |
