PURPOSE:To prevent the impressing of a DC voltage to a electro striction element during still reproduction operation by adding a tracking error voltage occurring during the still reproduction operation with a gradient voltage to form a drive voltage form the electro striction element, and running a magnetic tape until reaching such a position as the average value of the drive voltage comes to zero approximately, and stopping the tape. CONSTITUTION:In the still reproduction operation, a gradient wave in a prescribed inclination is generated by a gradient wave generation circuit 20. Meanwhile, an arithmetic circuit 18 generates a DC component corresponding to a tape stopping position and a tracking error correction signal to correct the distortion, etc., of a track, and these two signals are added with each other in an adding circuit 19. In a polarity decision circuit 32, the polarity of the average value Av of a drive signal is discriminated, and a signal representing the result of said discrimination is supplied to a capstan motor drive circuit 34. Then the magnetic tape is fed for a short length so that the average value of drive voltages for bimorph plate 2A, 2B goes to zero volts. Therefore, no DC voltage is impressed to the bimorph plates 2A, 2B during the still reproduction operation.
