An oblong acetabular cup (40) which includes a cavity (13) for receiving a bearing element (44) is provided. The plane (56) of the opening into the cavity (13) is skewed relative to the prosthesis' longitudinal plane (54) so as to achieve adduction correction, anteversion correction, or both adduction and anteversion correction. In certain preferred embodiments, the prosthesis (40) is constructed from two components (62, 64 or 102, 104) which can be oriente d with respect to one another to achieve different directions and amounts of anteversion correction. In some embodiments, the t wo components (62, 64) form a cusp (70) in the outside surface of the prosthesis (40). Surgical instruments (94) and surgical metho ds for implanting the prostheses (40) are disclosed.
