1,141,715. Refrigerating. PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. 13 Sept., 1966 [16 Sept., 1965], No. 40805/66. Heading F4H. Cryogenic liquid in the form of droplets suspended in a gas carrier is supplied to an inverted Dewar 13 through a tube 18 having perforations 22 therein to permit part of the gas carrier to escape. The cryogenic liquid and the remainder of the gas carrier impinge against a fibrous packing 16, e.g. glass wool or cotton, disposed adjacent an infra-red detector 10 to be cooled. The provision of perforations 22 is stated to reduce the evaporation losses caused by impingement of the relatively warm carrier against packing 16. An outlet tube 24 is provided. Preferred dimensions of apparatus employing liquid nitrogen and being inclined at 10 to 45 degrees from the horizontal are listed. A Stirling cycle refrigerator may be employed to provide cryogenic liquid for cooling three detectors.
|
