PURPOSE: A shadow copy mechanism is provided to enable a user to directly access a child resource for a volume shadow copy or a snap shot as if the child resource is a general file or a directory on a shared volume. CONSTITUTION: The mechanism comprises a distributed file system server component(201). The distributed file system server component(201) exposes a shared volume residing on a server computer. The shared volume includes a root and a volume shadow copy. The distributed file system server component(201) returns a resource list, including a volume shadow copy list for identifying a volume shadow copy, to a request client(203). The volume shadow copy resource enables the request client(203) to access the volume shadow copy.
